Egypt began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive performance, holding Belgium to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match at the Seattle Soccer Stadium in Washignton.
The Pharoahs took the lead in the 19th minute through a powerful strike from outside the box by midfielder Emam Ashour, his first international goal.
Belgium pressed for an equaliser in the second half before the introduction of Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute. A little more than 20 seconds later, Mohamed Hany diverted a cross into his own net under pressure from the big striker.
Belgium continued to push for a winner, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir and the Egyptian defense held firm during the closing stages.
The result gives both teams one point and leaves Group G open ahead of the match between Iran and New Zealand.
Egypt will next face New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21 before meeting Iran in Seattle on June 26. Belgium will play Iran in their second group match before ending the group stage against New Zealand.
