Casey Jarvis’ breakthrough year reached another significant milestone at St Andrews on Sunday, although the South African was left to settle for second place after Adrian Meronk produced a composed final round to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The 23 year old Jarvis began the final round with a two shot advantage after taking an 18 under par lead into Sunday, but a closing level par 72 allowed Meronk to overtake him and claim the title by two strokes.
Meronk signed for a four under par 68 to finish at 20 under, securing his fifth DP World Tour title and becoming the first Polish winner of the prestigious championship.
Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard also finished on 18 under alongside Jarvis, while Michael Stewart and Tommy Fleetwood shared fourth place.
Jarvis had threatened to pull away early in the final round, making two successive birdies on the front nine. However, bogeys at the ninth and 11th opened the door for Meronk, who responded with three birdies in six holes to establish control.
A bogey from Jarvis at the famous Road Hole, the 17th, further strengthened Meronk’s position before the Pole safely parred the final hole.
Jarvis needed an eagle at the last to force a tie but could only manage another par.
The conditions made the challenge even tougher, with a testing crosswind and gusts reaching around 35mph sweeping across the Old Course.
Despite falling short, Jarvis’ performance capped another impressive week in a remarkable breakthrough season. The South African has already won two DP World Tour titles and made his Masters and Open Championship debuts, finishing tied sixth at the Open.
His performance at St Andrews also offered another glimpse of his growing maturity. After finishing second, Jarvis waited for Meronk to receive the trophy before approaching him to offer his congratulations.
For Meronk, the victory was particularly meaningful. The 33 year old first played in the Alfred Dunhill Links in 2016, shortly after beginning his professional career, and admitted that he had considered taking a break from golf only a few months ago.
“It is amazing to win here ten years after I started my professional career in the Dunhill Links,” Meronk said. “It’s a dream come true because a couple of months ago I was thinking of taking a break from the game.”
Meronk also completed a memorable double after winning the Team Championship alongside amateur partner Tom Chaplin, the Keane frontman and singer songwriter.
The pair finished on 41 under par to secure the team title, with Chaplin producing crucial putting performances on the closing holes.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, now in its 25th edition, brings together leading professionals and amateur partners across the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
For Jarvis, however, the weekend will be remembered less for the result than for another significant step in a season that has firmly established him among the DP World Tour’s emerging stars.
And with the Open Championship returning to St Andrews in 2027, the young South African will have another opportunity to write his name into the history of the Home of Golf.
