SAPS Police Services (SAPS) confirmed that a chopper that went missing during a law enforcement investigation on Monday has been located, with all four occupants found safe.
The chopper disappeared during an investigation into an animal carcass that was discovered in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
According to preliminary reports, “the chopper landed in a densely vegetated area to allow the investigation team to conduct on-the-ground assessments,” said SANParks spokesperson JP Louw.
However, during the operation, the crew became disoriented in thick bush. Louw explained that “the team reportedly became disoriented due to the thick bush,” adding that “the GPS device ran out of battery power, resulting in the team being unable to relocate the helicopter.”
A search and rescue operation was launched after the team failed to return as scheduled.
Efforts included aerial and ground teams, supported by drones and advanced navigation technology.
Weather conditions initially hampered the search, forcing one helicopter to withdraw, while drones continued scanning overnight.
Police spokesperson in Mpumalanga Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that efforts to re-establish contact were successful this morning, following an intensive overnight search.
“This morning, 7 April 2026, the chopper that went missing with four occupants has been successfully located, with all individuals found alive and unharmed.”
“The group had safely landed in a remote area on Monday, 06 April 2026, but as they attempted to navigate through thick bush, they could not. After spending the night in the bushes, they were spotted this morning by a SANPARKS helicopter search team, who saw them waving for assistance,” Mdhluli said.
Mdhluli added that further investigations are underway into the incident, including the suspected poaching case.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, remarked that the committed members were carrying out their duties even on a day that is recognized as a holiday in the country.
