Premier Dr Phophi Constance Ramathuba has been elected the provincial chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo uncontested.
This comes after High Court in Polokwane, dismissed an urgent application to interdict the provincial elective conference taking place this weekend.
Fullview earlier reported that ANC structures in Limpopo have forged a “unity of convenience” slate that will see the top five positions go uncontested, allowing Ramathuba to take the helm uncontested, replacing outgoing provincial chair Stanley Mathabatha.
The elected top five in the province is as follows:
- Chairperson – Dr Phophi Ramathuba
- Deputy Chair – John Mye
- General Secretary – Reuben Madadzhe
- Deputy Secretary – Pule Shai
- Treasure – Eddie Maila
However, tensions between the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP) dominated the conference, with delegates booing the SACP representative delivering a message of support.
The communist party put itself on a collision course with the ANC when it confirmed it would contest elections independently, after years of endorsing the ANC at the polls.
The ANC, SACP and Cosatu have been in the political alliance since 1990, based on their common ideological goals rooted in the national democratic revolution, a political and social theory on transformation aimed at a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and united society.
The Provincial Conference will now focus on reviewing the organization’s performance, and sharpening political strategies ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
