KwaZulu-Natal cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC and a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) central committee Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi removed as AmaZulu prime minister.
Fullview understands Buthelezi is accused of failing to preserve the dignity of the Zulu throne and unity of the nation in the past eleven months he has been on the hot seat.
It has been widely speculated that there is a frantic push to have Buthelezi fired before the annual commemoration of the battle of Isandlwana to be held on January 22, 2025 in Nquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Buthelezi took over the position that was left vacant after the death of former IFP leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Prince Buthelezi died in September last year, and had held the position of traditional prime minister for almost 70 years years. He had worked with three different kings from 1954 until his death last year.
A statement signed by King MisuZulu ka Zwelithini has called on the AmaZulu to unite in support of the process to appoint a successor.
“From time immemorial, the position of the prime minister has held profound significance. It’s a role of unwavering service to the throne and the nation, embodying the sacred bond between the monarchy and the people. It’s a role steeped in tradition, wisdom and a commitment to the well-being and unity of the Zulu kingdom.
“Today, I address you with a heavy heart as I announce my withdrawal with immediate effect of the name of Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi from this esteemed position. Reasons for the withdrawal are to be shared with traditional leaders and the nation in due course as we’re still observing uMkhosi until the end of January 2025,” the statement read.
“The throne remains committed to upholding the sacred values and traditions that bind us together as a people, ensuring that this esteemed continues to serve its vital role in our nation.”
Buthelezi is also understood to have played a role in the breakdown in the relationship between the king and the Ingonyama Trust Board, of which he is trustee and chairperson.
The new traditional prime minister is expected to be announced during the Battle of Isandlwana commemoration to be held at Isandlwana Battlefield in Nquthu, while deputy traditional prime minister Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza is expected to act as traditional prime minister.
