The legendary Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe, also known as ‘Modimo wa bolo’, has passed away at his home in Atteridgeville, Tshwane on Tuesday night.
In recent years Moripe was confined to a wheelchair after suffering a mild stroke that was worsened by the effects of a long-term knee injury that stopped his playing career in the late 1980s.
Moripe (71), was arguably one of the greatest players South Africa has ever seen and filled up the stadiums in the 70s and 80s.
Fans called him “Modimo wa Bolo” after he made a name for himself at Pretoria Callies, for whom he played for in the NPSL.
In 1973, he was named Sportsman of the Year after a memorable performance for the NPSL Invitation XI against a selected British All Stars XI led by Rodney Marsh.
He also played internationally for Caroline Hill in Hong Kong and briefly for Orlando Pirates. Persistent knee injuries ended his playing career in the late 1980s.
In honour of his legacy, the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville was renamed the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium, where he regularly supported Mamelodi Sundowns matches.
Tributes
Mamelodi Sundowns issued a heartfelt statement honouring the late icon.
“The Chairman and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, and Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC, along with the entire Yellow Nation, express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of football legend Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe.”
Aptly nicknamed Modimo Wa Bolo (Football God), Moripe was widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers South Africa has ever produced. He remained deeply connected to the game, often attending Sundowns matches at the stadium named in his honour and at Loftus Stadium.
South African Football Association (SAFA), meanwhile, eulogised Moripe for laying the foundation for South African football.
“A legend has fallen. Thank you Ntate Lucas “Masterpiece” Moripe for laying the foundation for what we know as the sport of the people “football”. May your soul rest in peace,” SAFA posted on social media.
SuperSport United, also based in Moripe’s home city of Pretoria, sent tributes for the fallen player and so were Magesi FC.
“Everyone at SuperSport United is saddened to learn of the passing of the legendary Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Matsatsantsa.
