The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has laid criminal charges at the Rosebank Police Station against CarTrack following the tragic death of Gcina Dhladhla.
The 29-year-old, call centre agent collapsed and died in the bathroom after reportedly being denied sick leave despite submitting medical certificates.
The ANCYL Regional spokesperson, Oscar Kanyane, said the employee informed her superior that she was feeling unwell, but she was still instructed to show up for work.
“It is further alleged that after becoming visibly ill while on duty, the employee was told to take a few minutes to recover in the bathroom, where they subsequently collapsed and tragically passed away,” said Kanyane.
The company said the woman received immediate assistance from trained on-site first responders.
Kanyane said they welcomed the positive response from the police as an inquest has been opened.
He said there has to be a full, transparent, and urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
“The ANC Youth League strongly condemns the exploitation of young workers and any workplace culture that places profit above human life, dignity, and well-being. No employees should ever be forced to work while unwell, and no family should have to suffer the devastating loss of a loved one under such circumstances.”
Dhladhla’s family is seeking answers on how her situation was handled, amid claims there were delays in calling an ambulance.
The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has also weighed in on the matter, calling for an urgent inspection of working conditions at the Cartrack’s Rosebank offices and protection for employees who come forward with information on workplace conditions.
The union’s, Newton Masuku, says the tragedy is made even more painful by questions about whether Dhladhla’s death could have been prevented.
Dhladhla’s funeral details have not yet been confirmed, as her body remains at a state mortuary for investigation. Cartrack has expressed condolences and said that it remains committed to supporting the family.
