Soweto giants Swallows FC confirm the name change.

Swallows Football Club have confirmed that they have changed their name back to the original name of Moroka Swallows.

The club was awaiting the outcome of a Safa correspondence to Fifa clarifying the issue of an outstanding debt owed to Brazilian player Igor Alves before the club can start using the name Moroka Swallows.

Seemingly the matter has since been resolved, after the current owners bought the rights to the name Moroka Swallows when the club was liquidated.

Swallows FC have bounced back from the rungs of the fourth tier of local football to become a formidable force in the DStv Premiership.

David Mogashoa, a businessman and owner of Bahwiti Investments, together with Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, were the brains behind its revival back to the upper echelons of local football. Though Mogashoa did not want to reveal how much they bought the club for, it is an open secret that they paid (former Moroka Swallows boss Leon) Prins close to R25-million, and in 2019 Swallows bought the status of Maccabi FC.

Moroka Swallows were founded in 1947, as one of the two original Soweto clubs alongside Orlando Pirates.

Until their relegation in 2014/15, they had played in the top flight every single campaign, going down in the PSL Promotional Play-offs.

But things got from bad to worse for the Dube Birds, as they got also relegated from the National First Division in the following campaign.
