Renowned South African TV anchor Derek Watts has died at the age of 74 following a battle with cancer.
The news of his death was confirmed by Watts’ daughter Kirsty.
Watts was diagnosed with skin cancer that had spread to his lungs.
The veteran journalist had initially shared a video on his social media where shared that he had been diagnosed with severe sepsis.
In June, Mnet published a statement confirming the cancer diagnosis and thanked his many fans who had sent messages of support during his illness.
In July, the iconic presenter announced his retirement from the long-running investigative show, Carte Blanche due to his deteriorating health.
Watts former colleague Devi Sankaree Govender said that she grew up watching him on TV and he inspired her to pursue journalism.
“He made me feel like an equal.”
“He was a good man. He generally cared. He loved his country… This is a loss for South Africa. “I didn’t expect the end to be so sudden…”
She said she’ll forever remember Watts’ contribution to her career and her life.
