Springbok scrum-half Faf de Klerk has revealed that making South Africa’s squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia is a personal goal.
The 34-year-old scrumhalf came off the bench last weekend to score a try in the Springboks’ 80-31 win over the Barbarians in Gqeberha, but was not included in Rassie Erasmus’ squad for the Nations Championship.
De Klerk returned to South African rugby this season after four years in Japan, signing with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
Speaking to Fullview after the match, De Klerk made it clear that his international ambitions remain firmly alive. “I want to perform for my club side because that’s where you get selected from,” De Klerk said.
“I will do everything possible to make the Free State better, for the team and myself personally, and improve in everything I can. I am fully going for that spot, but if they want to go a different direction, I’ll be supporting all the way.” Those words underline the fierce competition within South African rugby.
